4th Grade Curriculum

Language/Grammar

Objective: The learner will identify the five parts of a complete sentence. Identify the part of speech for each word in a sentence. Construct a sentence given a framework of parts of speech. Explain a word choice depending on its position in the sentence.

Textbooks: Shurley Grammar Level 4, SIM 2010

Time Allotment: 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week

Course Content

First Quarter: Four kinds of sentences, complete subjects and predicates, prepositional phrases, simple diagramming

Second Quarter: Conjunctions and compound parts, interjections, helping verbs, possessive nouns, diagramming compound parts

Third Quarter: Transitive verbs and direct objects, indirect objects, diagramming direct and indirect objects

Fourth Quarter: Linking verbs and predicate nouns, predicate adjectves, diagramming linking verbs

Areas to be evaluated: Class participation, tests, class assignments, rubrics, use of correct capitalization and grammar in all written and oral work,

Reading/Vocabulary/Spelling

Objective: Read to make inferences based on liguc in the text and to determine explicit meanings from text. Determine main ideas of a text and determine the author's purpose for writing; find the key details that support the main idea and summarize these ideas. Determine the spelling and meaning of words and phrases as used in the text (including figurative language) and find out how word choice can shape the meaning of a context and selection. Read and understand expository texts as well as literary texts with proficiency on an indepenedent basis.

Writing

Objective: The student will learn to use writing as a way of offering and supporting opinions, demonstrating understanding of the subjects they are studying and conveying real and imagined experiences and events.

Mathematics

Objective: The learner will demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of math concepts, facts, and processes; develop computation skills; develop problem-solving techniques, and gain a greater appreciation for the order of math.

Time Allotment: 90 minutes per day, 5 days a week

First Quarter: Understand whole numbers and operations; time, data, and graphing; and multiplication and division facts

Second Quarter: Multiply by one- and two-digit numbers, divide by one- and two-digit divisors

Third Quarter: Geometry and algebra; and fractions and probability

Fourth Quarter: Measurement and decimals; perimeter, area, and volume

Science

Objective: Students will be given a solid foundation in Science which is soundly based on Biblical principles.

Objective: The learner will demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of North Carolina history through geography, civics, government, culture, and economics.

Physical Education

Objective: Students will develop competent motor skills, behavioral strategies to demonstrate responsibility, respect of self and others, and understand the importance of achieving and maintaining a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 admonishes us to remember that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Time Allotment: 45 minutes a day; 5 days a week

11 Weeks: Motor Skills: Apply competent motor skills and movement patterns as needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

11 Weeks: Movement Concepts: Understands concepts, principles, strategies and tactics that apply to the learning and performance of movement.

11 Weeks: Health Related Fitness: Understand the importance of achieving and maintaining a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
